Why Exfoliate Your Skin?

Do you exfoliate your skin?

You don't??? And why should you? Ohhhh....the many reasons you really should, where do I begin?!

Just incase you don't already know....Exfoliation is the process of removing dead cells from your skin. You figured they should just fall off right? Well, they do actually, but the problem is that as we get older that renewal process slows way down and I mean WAY down.

After you exfoliate any part of your body, the skin underneath is smooth and soft. Beware though, it is also unprotected because you just removed its special coating (dead cells) that were protecting and helping to keep the moisture in. So, moisturizing is very important after exfoliating, as well as applying sunscreen. Without that extra layer of cells, you are more susceptible to getting burnt in the sun.

Some people have certain skin conditions where dead cells don't fall off fast enough, causing an issue with dead skin buildup. The result is dry looking, flakey skin and little pimple like bumps. Keratosis Pilaris is a condition that's very common and can easily be corrected with exfoliation and moisturizing.

Never over exfoliate! You will make your skin red and irritated.

There are a number of ways to exfoliate your face:

  • facial scrubs
  • facial brushes
  • wash clothes
  • facial tools

Always be gentle. Twice a week is usually enough for your face. Only use "facial" scrubs on your skin, never use a scrub meant for your body on your face! Body scrubs are more abrasive than facial scrubs. You could cause and irritation or even scar your face.

To exfoliate your body:

  • use a body scrub
  • body brush
  • wash cloth
  • loffah

Here are some popular scrubs for face and body.  Remember never use the ones for your body on your face.
